Feb. 11, 2012 – Sermon on “Holy Prayer” by Matt Sanders

The sermon ” Holy Prayer” by Matt Sanders focused on seperating prayers into those that were self centered and those that were not.  He took us through many scriptures showing Christ as an example in humility and prayer for others. Other aspects of prayer were examined with an exhortation to have prayers of thankgiving and humility.  Scriptures used were: Luke 18:9-14, Matt: 5:43-44, Phil. 4:6, 1Thess:5:16-18, Jude 1:20, John 14:12-14, 1 John 5:14, Matt. 6:5-13.

    Spiritual humility is seen more in people that aren’t worried about being humble because they aren’t concerned with the question. It is a way of life and therefore is for them a normal state. Matt remarked that our prayer life is a reflection of our life at large. True. The Pharisee praying in public is self righteous and proud of it, but may not realize it. Whatever righteousness we may come in contact with is a gift from God, just like the gift of eternal life. When we think we recognize righteousness or manage to glimpse humility in ourselves, just pray in private that we are being truly led of the Holy Spirit and to be forgiven of presumptuous sins.
