July 4th, 2015 – Sermon on “4 Gospels: Why?” by Michael Smith

Michael Smith 1-12-13Michael Smith’s sermon on “4 Gospels: Why?” Explored the four gospels and the differences between them and the reasons they exist and he used highlights to admonish us to higher values. Michael involved the children and tailored his sermon to include them. Michael Smith’s sermon on “Know a good carpenter?” was a testimony of his life as a carpenter when much younger and the various spiritual applications that can be made to the world of carpentry. Michael Smith 1-12-13Michael started with leading the children in song and directed much of his sermon to the youth. Some notable quotes were: “Measure twice, cut once”, “Are we not like wood in some respects?”, and “If you don’t marry rich, marry a carpenter”.

Michael Smith’s sermon on “[Not] Sweet Talk”  focused on the decisions we make to server God or not and some of the ways we need to protect our faith. Michael started out with a recipe for a sweet and contrasted that with the scripture dealing with Elijah’s challenge to the priests of Baal and the way God revealed Himself to Elijah. He ended with advice on depression.

Michael Smith’s sermon on “Encounters that change us” was based on his testimony and used experiences that were turning points as examples. This included his marriage to Janet, his Springvale years among others. A notable quote was “Is now the time to put childish ways behind us?” Michael ended his sermon with a call for any unbaptized to make a commitment  to be baptized.

Michael Smith’s sermon on “Women in our lives” was a tribute to women and an admonition to overcome life’s difficulties. Michael made several references to the health of women in general and the benefit that good health has to everyone connected to women.  Notable quotes were: “Find a way to channel your energy and love… to build a ministry”, “if you don’t like your doctor, find one you like”, and “if you put your priorities right, then the things of life will fall in place.”

Michael Smith’s sermon on “A Father’s Example”  started out with Michael explaining the positive influence his parents had on his formative years, especially his father. Michael read a testimony by Lorraine Carr about her father and then named most of the members of the church that had influenced him, most of whom had passed on by now. Michael admonished the young people to watch their associations and to develop character. He also challenged the church at large to touch someone’s life.

Michael Smith’s sermon on “People of Action – Examples from the Bible for today” contained many examples of how the actions of people in the Bible led to mostly positive results.  Some excerpts are: a short person climbed a tree, a hole in the roof, dipping himself in the river Jordan, cutting off an ear, touching the Ark and dying.

Michael Smith’s sermon on ” A Brief time on Earth” was a high bandwidth call for us to remember how fast time flies and to make sure we are making the most of the moments, whether it be as a youth growing up, or in choosing careers or mates, or in raising a family. Michael used many personal experiences to make his points.

Michael Smith’s sermon on “Life’s two Roads” was a lesson in making good choices. Michael gave credit to Charles Swindoll’s book Living the Psalms and then proceeded to use a combination of  Psalms 1 and interaction with the children of the church to make his points on taking the right road in life. This paraphrase sums up the sermon: “Seeking good friends,  guarding your walk, meditating on God’s Law equals to the formula for success.”

Michael Smith’s sermon on “David and Goliath revisited” was also billed as “3 Reasons for fighting our own Goliath”.  Michael mixed stories of his youth in with the story of David when as a youth he killed Goliath in a battle the Israelite men were too frightened to fight. Michael encouraged all of us, especially the youth of the church to overcome adversity through faith and determination.
