July 21, 2012 – Sermon on “Chuzzelewit, Pecksniff, Tapley & Pinch” by John Crisp

John Crisp’s sermon titled “Chuzzelewit, Pecksniff, Tapley & Pinch” started out with a review of the novel Martin Chuzzelewit by Charles Dickens. John wanted us to be familiar with the characters of the novel so we could understand the examples of selfishness and self-realization he used.  John then continued with scriptural admonitions on selfishness and self-indulgence.

John  used the foillowing scriptures: Gal. 5:19-21, James 3:14, Matt. 23:25, James 5:4-5, Phil. 2:3-8, Gal. 5:16, Ps. 119:36.

Really enjoyed your sermon Sabbath. That was a new twist to an old
problem that we all battle daily. You did a great job in telling the story. It is true that Selfishness sneaks up on us.
I appreciate so very much that Jeff has given us this ability to converse with one another. . . I know he goes to a lot of trouble to keep this sermon blog site up. I thank God daily for the church family he has given us. What a blessing!

  2. John says:

Jeff, the characters were from Dickens’ novel Martin Chuzzelewit. Thanks for the overview.

  4. John Brann says:

Thanks, John did not realize you older more mature folks struggle with this one as well as I do, thanks so much for your dedication to church and Jesus Christ.

  5. John Crisp says:

John, I think for most of us it will be a life-long struggle to overcome selfishness completely. Jesus certainly did but his disciples wrestled with selfishness while following him. There are numerous examples.

I have known and know some people who I consider selfless. I’m not one of them but hope to be.
