Michael Smith’s sermon Personal Choice / Public Witness: Alcohol Use, focused on the choice to drink alcohol and the effect this choice has on a person’s Christion Witness. Michael used personal testimony to illustrate the effects of drinking on personal, employer and family relationships. Michael began with the foundation of the Biblical freedom to drink and finished with his personal decision to abstain.
Scripture used were: 1 Cor 6:19, Eph 5:18, Gen 19:33, Prov 23: 31-32, 1 Tim 5:23, Rom 12:2, Prov 20:1 and 1 Cor 8:9.

I appreciated the nerve Michael showed by answering the call to bring this message. It is a subject that can be sensitive and he handled it very well. My own view is found in 1 Cor 9:25 “And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things”. Temperance is defined in the Merriam-Webster dictionary in part as “moderation in or abstinence from the use of alcoholic beverages”. The usage or not of alcohol isn’t the point. Temperance is the point. Once temperance is attained, then all things follow in order.

I also enjoyed Michael’s sermon. Michael recalled as a young boy his dad refusing a beer from their neighbor and the lasting impression it made on him. This brings me to believe that we should be abstainers in the use of alcohol. Lk 17: 1 He said to His disciples, “It is inevitable that stumbling blocks come, but woe to him through whom they come ! 2 “It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea, than that he would cause one of these little ones to stumble.
